EZ-Log Was Born out of Pain I was struggling at times with my logbook. I'm sure you've had days when your logbook just doesn't balance. I was taught to add up all four duty status lines and if the total came out to 24 (hours) then my logbook was good. Most days, this worked fine. The days that didn't work out always seemed to be those really long days. I was tired, hungry, and wanted to eat and hit the bunk in the sleeper. I'm sure you've had days like that too.
Inspiration Strikes Before I began driving, I had a lot of experience with computers. I began thinking about how I could turn my logbook into a program on my laptop. I tried several different tools to develop my "electronic" logbook. I finally settled on Microsoft Excel because I could make a replica of a logbook page and get it to do the math. My first goal was to just do the grid from the logbook. The program did the heavy lifting, and I could relax.
Features Get Added The "grid" worked so well, I began adding new features. Like a mileage calculator. That way I could look over at the odometer, put in the ending milage and have total miles for the day. Then I screwed up and took early on a reset. I was sure my time off qualified for a reset. But, it didn't. My dispatcher made me sit in a department store parking lot for about two days to make sure. That was what inspired me to create the 70 Hour Calculator. When I would get an idea that would help me get my logbook done faster or easier, I figured out how to put in EZ-Log. Eventually, other drivers saw what I was doing and wanted copies for themselves. They liked it and suggested selling EZ-Log on the Internet. |
